View Full Version : Betta Lady getting fatter and fatter
Sorry, I do not have the time now to search. Can anyone give advice. Is it eggs or is she blocked? How to treat? Must run now. Will be back bit later.

Hi
Are your betta scales raised?
Is she active?
Did she lose any colour.
I can think of 3 options
1 she has dropsy
2 she is filled with eggs
3 she is fed to much
Hi Rooivlerkie
It was dropsy. I let it progress too far, because I thought she was filled with eggs. She died today. I treated with Baktupur, but too late.

Sorry to hear about your female.
I do also hate it when I lose bettas or any other fish.
If the fish loses colour and is inactive he or she might have dropsy
In hindsight, the only sign was that she got fatter and fatter. Near the end she started resting on the substrate and hide in plants. She was eating well, active, no raised scales and no sign of illness for a long time. The raised scales only started to show the day after my first post. Never lost color, except at the very end. I was really under the impression that she is fat with eggs, as I had her and the male together for a long time, but the male showed no interest and did not flare at her or attempted to build a nest. So I blamed him for her not being able to spawn.
But I learned something. Apparently, when a fish (Betta) is fat from eggs, it is not visible viewed from top. In her case it was visible from the top and side since the early stages and they say that is the first sign of dropsy. That is according to the Internet though.
