Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what kind of demands for fish are out there. I recall having read about discus as a big demand and are relatively expensive to buy... Is there a big demand for betta's? What are the LFS looking for all the time and that always seem to run out of (I'm referring to live stock). Will they take Angels easily... or perhaps smaller fish are more popular?...

Any advice for first time breeders for profit/non-profit purposes...

The best advice would be to get to know your LFS well. That way they will be more likely to purchase your babies from you. If you have already built up a relationship with them, ask them what fish are their best sellers and which fish they would be willing to purchase from you. We recently got rid of our breeding Kribs as there is not much of a demand for them here and we were struggling to get rid of all our babies, I'd rather concentrate on breeding fish which I know I can easily get rid of than 'wasting' valuable space on fish I'd struggle to sell.

Right... so 1 of my lfs confirms neons and guppies being the biggest seller. Dwarf cichlids seem to be quite popular for demand as well. From what I can tell...its seems to be all about "size and availability... the smaller the better"

Note to self...Don't breed kribensis...they wont even take them for free...:amazed:

Yip, that's the problem we were having - no demand at all for them

I think there is a relatively good demand for Betta's, merely because of the fact that they can be kept successfully in a small container (bowl/tank/etc), and they're really beautiful and hardy fish - this makes them appeal to many.

BUT... unless you are either breeding on a commercial basis (full scale) or breeding excellent specialty stock (such as Discus), don't try and breed to supply a demand, just breed for fun and because the thrill of getting to a newly hatched spawn of whatever your favorite fish is. If you love 'em, chances are a few thousand others do too.
