no - if you live in a big city there is alot of crap on your roof that will wash into the holding tank every time it rains and poison the water.

Especially if it rains oil from time to time...:mad: parts of CT has this problem.

yea - the idiot that i bought the house from had the main gutter run into the koi pond... i stay like 4km from the refinery.... his fish were fullllllllllllll of ulcers etc

Personally I wouldn't use rain water either - perhaps 100 years ago or so - but not with all the pollution, oil, smog etc we now have. And I think, and stand to be corrected, that Cape Town has less of a pollution problem than places like Jo'burg.

maintained ... how often everytime a bird poops on it? everytime a plane flys overhead?
cleaned... how? chemicals? with a broom?....

You might generally be OK, but is it worth risking your fish like that? You do not have any control over the conditions up there...Where I live I wouldn't dare.
