What's this? Blue Green Algae? It's growing slowly and suffocating the leaves it is on. It's on my rotala too.

What do I do to remove it? I got a Pleco and a Garra taeniata. Both aren't really doing their job.

Good old Cyano... It is not an algae. It is a bacteria. The best way to rid yourself of this stuff, is to create some more flow in your tank. I have it too, but a cube is not the easiest tank to add extra circulation to. But some extra water movement will help a lot! Also, adding an airstone at night may help to remove it. I have no clear evidence of this, but it seems to be working for me, and it worked in my marine tank too...

Good luck... The last alternative is an antibiotic... But that is a VERY last resort.

Interesting thread azurekoi :p Read most of it.

Thanks for the link Vez

Sean J, I got my HOB Aquaclear 300 on full flow. I can only add and airstone in the day otherwise I can't sleep. I'll try it tomorrow. Ugly b#st#ards.

Are there any fish to remove it? I also read (link that Vez gave) that Elodea secrete antibiotic stuff which can help with it. I'll get some Elodea from a girl in my class and cultivate some for backup and just let it float in the tank :p

Heck, if elodea removes it, I see a hole bunch of elodea increasing in price soon! LOL!

Ah, the tank is in your room... But try an eheim air pump. I got one the other day, and it works like a bomb and it's SILENT!

Unfortunately Elodea is a BL species.....

Haha well you'll never know if you don't try. I accept PayPal and credit card ;) Oh and the pump... How much?

Unfortunately Elodea is a BL species.....

Well then... call me black.
......
What? Me? I don't have any of 'em. And I won't propagate it if I get some. Don't worry.

The small dark green dots are GSA - Green Spot Algae. A sign of a lack of Po4. Or lighting on for too long.

Maybe some day. I don't have money to waste (no not like that - I mean it's not like I NEED it) . I want another tank.

razor try upping nitrates.. cyano does not like nitrates but loves phosphate and high organic build up also dead spots in your tank. you can do a black out and remove as much as possible. this stuff is a bacteria not an algae and will grow like a plant if you feed it what it wants.

good luck! also as a last resort erythromicyn kills it dead!

Nitrates you say?

I dose the full microbelift range. I could OD nitrates and cut on phosphates. I'm going to put an air stone in there and reduce light period.

I've had the lights off for a very long time now, and also keeping my room closed that it's dark. I had an airstone under it but it doesn't seem to be getting any less. There's even a few patches on the sand :(

What fish will eradicate it?

azurekoi

Cyanobacteria is not overtly dependant on light mate (remeber - it is a symbiotic relationship between algae and bacteria cells,so not entirely dpendant on photosynthesis...)

No fish that I know of will eat cyano... It can also turn toxic in high concentrations...

I also had this on a dead spot , improved circulation , scrubbed and vacuumed as much as possible and it disappeared!

Good. I don't like having a dark tank in the day. I removed most of it but it's still increasing on some spots :(

How do you vacuum the tank? It's also getting bad on my rotala.

I removed the plants/leaves it was on, and also manually removed some if it from other spots. I feed a little less and dose ferts a little less too. It seems to be getting a bit less and it's also helping with my snails :)

Here's some pics of a S.percnopterygionus eating Cyanobacteria, just for those interested. So there is a better solution, but I guess finding this species is a hard game.
