Excuse me if this is very out of place, but it has to do with those wild Rams. Altum, are they like wild angels, discus etc, more picky on water conditions and generally harder to keep, or maybe hardier that store bought ones? Most rams I see in LFS's don't look too good.
As the the title suggests razer, they speciality fish, exotic and as such, should only be kept by the most advance fish keepers. They are extremely fussy with regards to water condition and food. If you manage to breed wild caughts, then, imo, you are qualified as an experienced keeper.
Zoom I agree completely with your opinion on that.
However, it is really sad that nowadays with the current state of most of the available Blue Rams, you probably have a better chance of keeping wild caught alive!
At least you have control over providing the correct parameters for wild caught and you are not going to have sudden death for no apparent reason at all.

That's *kind* of what I was referring too, concerning the pathetic condition of those in store.
Altum
Firstly, sorry for straying slightly off topic in your thread.
Secondly, how many wild caught have you got coming in?
Lastly, the Rams I got from you are still stunning!

Let's first clarify here....
You get the tank bred and then you get the tank bred. LPS don't necessarily care, know or even inquire as to where their fish are coming from. Wholesale can supply, so take. You can organize strong healthy tank bred through a reputible breeder, seller. Just have a simple chat with Altum. if you want Rams, but after your innitial "interview" with Altum he deems you are not in a position to provide the correct conditions for wild caughts, he will then see if he can source tank bred that may better suit your conditions.
Just a thought.

They do look nice. Probably for the more experienced but maybe just for future reference.

yes, but not for next 6-8weeks...we've planned OTHER niceties!!
They are in my top 10 Callichthyidae, for +25years
I also want some!
I'll post online, none will go through LFS

Rather robust, depends not on source and handling alone.
Simple research....

Hongsloi SUPER RED
No... A. pandurini or A. sp INCA 50, or A. macmasteri, A. trifasciata, A. bitaeniata, A. cacatuoides (Black Chin)... So many apistos, so little tank space.
Hypsophrys nicaraguensis - please

It's ok
NOT many
At the outset, maybe 30-40 fish, whichever is most feasible...
I was waiting to hear about those last Rams you got...hehe
good to know

No promises made ...
However when something is on it's way for some REALLY PATIENT CHAPS, the wait will be worth it
Come now Dirk, you should know not to spread rumours...:cheesy:
CAN you keep WildCaught Rams??
I believe February should see representatives of all those fish you have hinted at
@Altum (http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/member.php?u=67) - Needing Apistos dude! LOL! Come on man!
Needing $$$/Euros dude! LOL!
... most of all it's perfect synchronisation, of several ifferent suppliers
...or just DumbLuck to get what I want, the same time I have tankspace, AND Budget, when suppliers are willing to co-operate for our teeny-tiny order!
Hongsloi SUPER RED
Had those twice in 2010/2011
Time to get something else , that is not a tankbred strain
Doesn't mean it won't be ordered , but not highest priority
BESIDES , even though regularly available, we don't have an easy time selling them .
No... A. pandurini or A. sp INCA 50, or A. macmasteri, A. trifasciata, A. bitaeniata, A. cacatuoides (Black Chin)... So many apistos, so little tank space.
I have TWO of the above on order already
No guesses..
Concerns for quantities, and realtime availability, and last minute changes :wondering:

See above
I wish I could be more helpful, but this is a first for me, that I am getting fish in THIS particular manner.
I have secured the general order, at this stage it is too far away from precise costing, actual dates, full order confirmation.
I really am quite busy , these last few weeks..I don't see it quieting down for a long while.
...will try to replywithin 1-2days, when you send PM with email add, and your queries
....so you can hound me!:p

Hi Altum and others,
Just to give you an idea. I am looking for Geophagus altifrons, they come as different variants. There are small ones on the market being sold as Geophagus surinamensis, but they do not grow out like these and they do not have this colour, they also have a more prominent black dot on the side which I am not looking for. On the pic is also a wild angel that comes from Peru, but there are red backed angels that are now being caught in the wild which I am after. Geophagus altifrons are not for the Nano tanks guys because they grow to 30 cm, but stunning fishes as you can see.
What I would also say Tankmaster is that wildcaught hongsloi are mundane pale blue with just a little bit of red on the head. The super reds are fishes were selected for red in former East Germany over something like 20-30 generations breeding brothers to sisters all the time. As a result they are actually highly inbred and are quite fragile, and you will only get them from captive bred sources not on South American shipments.
Kind regards,
Dirk
